How long does it take to fix your credit?

Everybody wants a number. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what is wrong, and the range runs from about a month to several years. Here is what each situation actually looks like so you can plan instead of hoping.
30 to 60 days: utilization and errors in your favor
Paying card balances down reports at your next statement and can move a score within one or two cycles. This is the fastest legitimate improvement available.
A clear-cut error — an account that is not yours, a paid collection still showing a balance — can be corrected in a single 30-day dispute cycle when the documentation is clean.
3 to 6 months: a normal dispute campaign
Each dispute round runs 30–45 days, and most files need more than one round: bureau dispute, furnisher dispute, escalation on anything unverified.
Alongside that, three to six months of perfect payments plus low utilization starts to register as a pattern rather than a fluke.
6 to 24 months: real damage
Recent late payments, charge-offs and collections hurt most while they are fresh and lose weight as they age. Time is doing part of the work and you cannot rush it.
This is where consistency wins: current on everything, utilization low, no new applications you do not need.
2 to 10 years: the long items
Most negatives fall off seven years after the date of first delinquency. Chapter 7 bankruptcy stays ten years, Chapter 13 seven. Hard inquiries clear in two.
People do get approved for mortgages two to four years after a bankruptcy, well before it drops off, by rebuilding clean history in the meantime.
What actually changes the speed
How recent the damage is, how many items there are, whether the bureaus verify them, and whether new negatives keep landing. That last one is the most common reason a file stalls.
The short version
- Utilization is the only fast lever — 30 to 60 days.
- Dispute rounds are 30 to 45 days each; plan on several.
- Recent damage fades over 6 to 24 months as it ages.
- Most negatives fall off at seven years; Chapter 7 at ten.
