How to fix my credit

Fixing credit is unglamorous and sequential. There is no trick, but there is an order that works better than random effort.

Quick takeaways

  • Inventory first, dispute second, behavior third.
  • Errors are usually the fastest points available.
  • Six to twelve months for substantial change is normal.

1. See the whole picture

Get all three reports. List every negative item with its dates, balances and furnisher. You cannot plan around what you have not written down.

2. Challenge what is wrong

Dispute inaccurate, incomplete and unverifiable items with the bureaus and the furnishers. This is where the fastest gains usually are, because errors are common.

3. Fix the live behavior

Get current, automate minimum payments, drop utilization below 30%, keep old accounts open, and stop applying for new credit for a while.

Then hold the line. Most people see real movement within a few reporting cycles and substantial change over six to twelve months.
