Before you offer anything
Validate the debt and confirm it is actually yours, actually that amount, and still within the reporting window. Never pay a debt you have not verified — payment can restart other clocks.
What the letter should say
Reference the account number, state the amount you are offering and how you will pay, and state plainly that payment is conditional on the collector deleting its tradeline from all three bureaus. Require their written agreement before any payment.
The realistic view
Many collectors will not agree in writing. If they refuse, you can still settle for the balance reporting accurately as paid. Get every term in writing, keep the records, and verify your report afterward.
