How to build credit from scratch

With no history, lenders have nothing to judge. The goal early on is not a high score — it is simply having accounts that report.

Quick takeaways

  • Secured cards and credit-builder loans are the standard start.
  • Confirm the account reports to all three bureaus.
  • Low utilization plus on-time payments; nothing clever required.

Start with an account that reports

A secured credit card, a credit-builder loan, or a student card are the usual entry points. Confirm the issuer reports to all three bureaus before you sign up; some do not.

Use it small and pay it in full

Charge something you already buy, keep the reported balance under about 10% of the limit, and pay in full every month. Carrying a balance builds nothing but interest.

Then add slowly

After six to twelve months of clean reporting, most people qualify for a standard card. Add a second account, keep the first open, and let time do the rest.
