Hard red flags
Payment demanded before any work is done. A guarantee that specific items will be removed or your score will rise by a set amount. Advice to dispute accurate information. An offer of a new credit identity or an EIN to use in place of your SSN — that is fraud, and it is on you.
Also walk away from anyone who tells you not to contact the bureaus yourself. That is your legal right.
What legitimate looks like
A written contract, a written statement of your rights, a three-day cancellation window, clear monthly pricing, and honest limits on what is possible with your file.
If you have been scammed
Cancel payments, keep every document, and file complaints with the CFPB, the FTC and your state attorney general.
