609 letter template: what it is and what it isn't

Section 609 of the FCRA is about your right to see what is in your file. It is not a secret deletion trick, despite what a lot of the internet claims.

Quick takeaways

  • Section 609 is a disclosure right, not a deletion loophole.
  • Include full ID details so the request is not rejected.
  • Follow it with a specific, evidence-based dispute.

What a 609 letter actually does

It requests disclosure of the information in your file, including the sources of that information. It can be a useful first step, because it gives you the details you need to write a specific dispute.

What to include

Your full name, current address, date of birth, the last four of your SSN, a copy of your ID, the specific accounts you want disclosure on, and a request for the source of that information. Send it so you have proof of delivery.

The honest expectation

A 609 request does not obligate a bureau to delete anything. Deletions come from an item being inaccurate or unverifiable under the dispute process. Use 609 to gather facts, then dispute on the facts.
