Do you need a financial advisor?

The most common reason people never talk to a financial advisor is the belief that advisors are for rich people. That was truer twenty years ago. Today the question is less about how much you have and more about whether decisions are piling up faster than you can make them.
What an advisor actually does
Builds a plan around specific goals — retirement, a house, college, getting out of debt — and puts numbers to them.
Handles the parts most people avoid: asset allocation, tax-efficient account choices, insurance gaps, beneficiary designations, an estate basics checklist.
Keeps you from the expensive emotional decisions, which is usually where the fee pays for itself.
How they get paid
Fee-only, flat or hourly: you pay for advice directly, typically a few hundred dollars an hour or a set project fee. No product commissions.
Assets under management: usually around 1% a year of what they manage.
Commission-based: paid by the products they sell you, which is where conflicts of interest live.
Ask one question before anything else: are you a fiduciary at all times, in writing? A fiduciary is legally required to act in your interest.
When it is worth hiring one
A windfall, inheritance or equity event. A divorce, death or business sale. Retirement within ten years. Self-employment with no plan. Or simply having money and no idea whether you are on track.
When to fix something else first
If you are carrying 24% credit card debt or your report is full of errors, no investment plan will outrun that. Clean up the credit and the high-rate debt, then optimize.
For a straightforward situation, a low-cost target-date fund and an automatic transfer beat a paid plan you will not follow.
The short version
- Advisors are not only for high net worth clients.
- Confirm fiduciary status in writing before anything else.
- Fee-only avoids the commission conflict of interest.
- Kill high-rate debt and fix report errors before optimizing investments.
