Use the career you already have
Consultant in your old field, contract bookkeeper, part-time paralegal, project manager for hire, industry trainer, expert witness, grant writer, freelance technical writer.
This is where the money is. Your experience is the product, and rates are far above general part-time work.
People-facing and flexible
Substitute teacher, school aide, tutor, test proctor, museum docent, library assistant, hotel front desk, retail associate, national or state park seasonal staff, event or box office staff.
Work from home
Customer service rep, virtual assistant, online tutor or ESL instructor, transcriptionist, bookkeeper, survey and usability tester, remote scheduler, online course instructor.
Hands-on and outdoors

Two money details first
If you claim Social Security before full retirement age, earnings above the annual limit temporarily reduce your benefit — withheld, not lost, and recalculated later. After full retirement age there is no limit.
Self-employed or 1099 work means quarterly estimated taxes and self-employment tax. Set aside roughly 25–30% and keep receipts for expenses.
